Cartoons As a Bridge to Understanding People Who Are Different

Some of the better cartoon characters who may be found in kid’s books and children’s ebooks are extremely accessible to small children. Younger children are captivated by them and find themselves relating to them easily. Well-drawn and eye-appealing illustrations carried by a text that is funny, informative, intriguing and pleasant can draw a child into inculcating many of the values displayed by the characters, and learning subsequent lessons. This form of education has been around for centuries and is the basis for fairy tales, as well as other kinds of myths and legends that can imbue meaning and significance not only for a child who is being entertained by a kid’s ebook, but for adults as well!

One of the primary qualities of story as a form of communication, and which is so easily accessible to children who are attracted to comic cartoon characters who are presented to them in the context of story, is that it is a way of using one’s imagination to discover roots of personal compassion. The relationship between imagination and compassion is evident in our language, our idioms and figures of speech. We speak about “putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes”, but we do not mean this literally. The ability to “suffer with” others, which is the meaning of the word “compassion” is dependent upon the ability to imagine.

A children’s book or children’s ebook has a lot of potential in indirectly teaching children how to be compassionate by putting them in other people’s shoes via the page, through the artwork, the humor and the storyline, and they can learn through seeing it illustrated on the page how to have empathy for others. This kind of encounter with the world through the media of a children’s ebook and the cartoon characters within is crucial for the full development of our children.

Learning With Professor Beetoven

We live in an age when the creative potential for educating children through powerful storytelling and rich character development has never been greater. From movies and TV to computers and multimedia platforms, there are endless possibilities for education. One of the primary vehicles for reaching kids so that they are not merely being entertained, but learning new facts about the world and about themselves, is through cartoons.  Professor Beetoven presents an excellent opportunity to teach small children not only basic scientific facts, but about how to behave in the world around them as well.

Professor Beetoven is a friendly bee with a big brain. He knows everything with the same certainty that most children ascertain facts and hold onto knowledge with newfound certainty and conviction. Like all children who begin to grasp facts, one of the ways of holding onto what one knows is to share it with others, and Professor Beetoven does so not only with simple clarity, but without putting on airs or showing off. His friends, most of whom are interested in learning as well as in having fun, are eager to find out what he has to say, whether it has to do with the size of the ocean or the number of fish species that live in it.

Friends such as Tad the Frog (who learns to be patient with Barnacle Bill despite many miscommunications), and others teach kids not only about having a sharp, inquisitive mind, but how to begin to discipline one’s own behavior, not to be lazy or sleep too much, to be nice to other people, share and not fight, but also how to have fun while learning about all the exciting scientific facts about what exists in the world around them.

CHARACTERS & CHARACTERISTICS

Kids relate well with cartoon characters who are predictable, and who show no innate irony or duplicity, especially if they are small children. There are thousands of cartoons of various types, dimensions and complexities available in contemporary books and ebooks. Children who are small respond best, however, to simple, clear and well-defined characters that are colorful and like children themselves – natural, friendly, confident and unpretentious. The cast of cartoon characters in The Adventures of Professor Beetoven meet all these criteria, and have a strong appeal to young children – they are colorful, familiar, bright and uncomplicated. Professor Beetoven is a simple yellow and black bee with a lightening stinger, spectacles and a blue graduation cap – all iconic allusions to intelligence. A human face, his eyes are wide and open, and he gazes out at young children with a friendly smile. Each character embraces a similar trope, and the look of each one carries with it the same familiar connotations of honesty, transparency, and humor. There is no masking of emotion, but a basic range that is easy for kids to pick up on.

The characters are humanized and personalized animals: a bee, a frog, a cat, an elephant, a bird, a bulldog, and others – including humans. They all engage on the level of raw human emotion and desire – the excitement and curiosity of Tad the Frog, the mellow punditry of Katnap the Cat, the silly but informed miscommunications of the loveable marine merchant Barnacle Bill. the wholesome exchange of facts about the world of science as conveyed by Professor Beetoven himself, each character shares some attribute of a child’s interior life and therefore are not only easy for kids to relate with, but are compelling and intriguing to children to look at and engage with on the page as well.

The Fascinating World of Facts

Kids do not have the brain capacity for abstraction. They are very literal-minded, and do not possess the brain capacity for abstraction, the adult balances of uncertainty or nuance, or to process metaphors and symbolic functions. Rather, kids are data-oriented, brains poised for the assimilation of facts about the world in which they live, and their young minds absorb these facts readily and with amazing speed. The whole world is new to a child, and the possibilities for opening their minds to see the rich quality of everything that exists, and excite them about the process of gathering knowledge and putting together the way things work is nearly limitless. Rote memory of facts and figures is sometimes necessary to help a child develop a sound foundation for more complex systems of information; however it is not always the best method. An alternative is to use comic characters from a cartoon book. Kids love to learn and recite facts, but using cartoon characters and having them read books online makes it a more intriguing, fascinating and entertaining endeavor. Some of the better characters in children’s ebooks mirror the personalities and character qualities of children, and teach facts with a great amount of humor and adventure, embedding the educational value in a good yarn that is easily accessible to young minds. Using a cartoon book can help to accentuate a child’s natural inquisitiveness by making the educational value seem to be a secondary function to an enticing, exciting and fascinating story in which the value of knowledge itself is emphasized. Learning new facts is exciting for children, and doing so within the context of storytelling framed in the attractive colors of cartoon illustrations offers kids a powerful alternative to the necessary mainstay of grilling rote facts and figures into their brains.
Children are excited to share the experience of learning itself with a persona who is like them, yet which possess a wealth of knowledge about subjects that fascinate and excite developing minds. Whether used formally in the classroom or at home, cartoon ebooks online or through other media can offer an exciting context for learning that kids appreciate and give added value to their educational experience. Cartoon children’s ebooks can therefore be used as a compelling tool in teaching children in a way that will enrich their educational experience, and make them excited about learning itself.

Cartoons Influence Children

Cartoons and comic characters have a profound influence on kids, whether they are watching them on television, reading a book or kid’s ebook, or accessing them on their computers. When they are presented with likeable, friendly, open and transparent characters (who embody the qualities of children themselves), cartoon characters can have a tremendous impact in influencing a child’s sensibilities about the world and what it is like. A well-rounded cartoon character as opposed to a cynical, crude one, can make the difference as whether your child leans towards being an optimist or a pessimist, for one example.

It goes without saying, this being the case, that cartoon characters influence your child’s values. When she encounters the better characters in children’s ebooks or elsewhere, characters who are not only childlike in their transparency and humility but also accessible, friendly, kind, honest – not perfect, but who struggle with impatience, laziness, being mad or grumpy and other issues, she is likely to model her own values to some degree on them. Parents, of course, are the primary models, and peers as well, but cartoons can definitely play a strong role depending upon the child’s personal circumstance.

Some of the better cartoon books and kid’s ebooks have characters that induce excitement about discovery, and appeal to a child’s innate curiosity. Learning becomes a thrill, rather than a dry duty. Excellent cartoon characters that are imbued with humor and involved in fun storylines while also communicating real knowledge about various subjects (such as history, geography, science or nature) can have a strong impact on children, igniting their own thirst for knowledge, and motivating them to want to learn more. When your child wants to learn and doesn’t see it as a duty, you have won ninety percent of the battle! Quality cartoon comics are one way to ignite that passion.

Comic Cartoons As a Unique Art Form

Comics and the cartoon characters that inhabit them, which have a broad appeal and strong influence on children, are driven by art and illustration but they are not usually hung on gallery walls. They can be published on paper or in kid’s ebooks, so they are not dependent on a certain media. They contain text, story, humor and plot, but they are not novels or literature. They are not a mere genre because they can contain many different genres, but rather they are a form, their own form of art, and they have a unique role in captivating, educating and entertaining children.

We want our children to be able to read well, to enjoy classic works of literature, to be savvy about art and art history, and to know how to apprehend and appreciate real music, but we are not all that concerned that they develop a taste for comics or cartoon characters. This is the case because kids already love cartoons. A children’s e-book cartoon is easily accessible, which makes it a pop art form that appeals to a wide range of people, including adults. The world of comics is not just about accessibility and escape, however, but a kid’s e-book can educate as well as entertain, and inform without being overtly didactic or preachy.

Comics and cartoon characters are unique in that they grab our attention, and it takes little effort to apprehend what is going on. Driven by illustration, the text offers interpretation and explanation, and together stories of humor, positive values and character qualities, and knowledge about just about any subject can be driven home in a humorous, exciting context. Learning takes place with minimum effort, and while other pursuits in other art forms are worth the effort, comics and kids e-books are a great way to get children started on that road.

PROFESSOR BEETOVEN AND HIS INFLUENCE

PROFESSOR BEETOVEN AND HIS INFLUENCE

Professor Beetoven has a wide-ranging influence not only on the other characters in his cartoon universe (as can be seen in his first published adventure, The Pacific Ocean, which is hopefully the first of several adventure ebooks), children also are easily influenced by his knowledge, friendliness, and humility. In contrast to hundreds of other cartoon characters that might be found who are sarcastic, chaotically drawn, crude or even lewd through innuendo, using sly references to appeal to watching parents but which convey something else altogether to children, Professor Beetoven is a positive influence because of his straightforward and wholesome qualities. He is like a child himself: not because he seems to know everything, but because of his pure curiosity about the world around him, and his desire to share in the joys of learning with his friends. Children can easily pick up on that adventure, and learn positive qualities and facts about science just as easily as they learn bad behaviors of even to be violent from other cartoon characters.

Professor Beetoven appeals to the best aspects of a child’s nature and personality in an ebook, and through the bond of story is able to both appeal to and help a child recognize those same attributes in herself. The professors curiosity blended with humility is a perfect mix for kids to emulate. It is far healthier for children to be excited about the world around them, about the shape and size and dimensions, for example, of the sea and its ports, its dangers, its occupants, than it is for a child to be mildly entertained by dueling opponents in an endless fight. Professor Beetoven offers a window for the child to look out on the world, see past his own limitations, and begin to appreciate the world around him with a sense of wonder.

Adventures Galore

Kids do not have a full capacity to learn new things through abstract lessons, being told rather than being shown. This is a well-established truth. Learning facts and information “by rote” might guarantee a fair mimicry of information that has been transferred from educator to child, enough to pass a test, but that is far from actually understanding, processing and applying information. Moreover, most parents know that it isn’t what they tell their child that motivates them, but how they themselves act by showing their children how to act in their daily lives.

Stories that are embodied in fables, legends, myths – even family stories about what has happened in the past – are all vehicles that capture the imaginations of children, and show them how information sits in context, what it means (the why behind it rather than just the how), and the possibilities for its expression and application. One of the most powerful contemporary ways of truly educating a child is through cartoon characters, whose adventures trigger the exploratory hearts of kids, and which ignite the passion for learning that can be nurtured and grow strong over time. It isn’t just a matter of getting a kid’s attention in an age of deficit disorders, but it is the natural way that human beings are inclined to learn.

Professor Beetoven and his friends in “The Pacific Ocean” introduce just such an adventure, as kids are invited to not only have fun with familiar characters and funny wordplay humor, but also explore the basic scientific facts behind the ocean itself: its parameters, its dangers, its occupants and its measurements. Combining colorful characters with learning about the ocean, coupled with an ongoing gag regarding Barnacle Bill’s poor hearing (which is sure to incite laughter), lends itself to capturing the imagination of the child, as well as appealing to her intelligence.
