Born in Queens, New York and raised in North Dallas, Texas, James Rumpf II (known as a New York City Cowboy) is a long-time cartoon fanatic, which is one of the reasons he started publication of a series of adventures featuring Professor Beetoven, a friendly Ambassador of Intelligence who “knows everything”, and various other characters in the cartoongems.com universe. Professor Beetoven was originally created in the early 1980s by Joe Oriolo, and was later featured in a cable pilot cartoon titled, “Friends Make the World Go Round”. James has rescued Professor Beetoven and his cadre of unlikely friends from the logs of cartoon history and has been very busy reintroducing them all to the world, particularly to the fresh minds of young children.
Some of the cartoons that influenced James early on when he was a kid were Huckleberry Hound, Felix the Cat, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Popeye the Sailor Man, and others. He likes to capture that same flavor of childhood innocence and curiosity about the world in his own characters and situations. These kinds of cartoons, he says, “are a safe escape. They are the only things that make my mind turn to wonder”. Cartoons, he says, are an entrance “into another world where there are no worries”.
Leading the pack in the cartoongems.com universe is Professor Beetoven, a bee that wears a graduation cap and who is extremely smart. But he isn’t just an intelligent bee, rather, says James, “he is the kind of person in life who knows everything and is just friendly to everyone, and you wonder, ‘how did he know that?’” In the first book published in a series titled, “The Adventures of Professor Beetoven”, James had the idea of teaching young children about the Pacific Ocean while entertaining them at the same time. So, he collected together a creative group online, including illustrator Ron Neal and writer Kristin Johnson, and they painstakingly worked on producing a quality book that was almost a year in the making. The end result is a funny, captivating story with well-drawn comic-style characters, imbued with humor, an engaging style, and lots of facts about the sea.
James is working to make the series continue until one day soon Professor Beetoven is alive and well in the minds of millions of children, the Ambassador of Intelligence, igniting curiosity about the natural world, teaching clear and positive values, and entertaining them with lots of humor and detail. After all, his mission is, he says, “to win people over one laugh at a time.”

In the early 1980s, Joe Oriolo, creator of Casper the Friendly Ghost and producer of over 260 Felix the Cat episodes, originated a cartoon character named Professor Beetoven. He devised Professor Beetoven along with 25 other cartoon characters. Hundreds of scripts were created around these characters. There is a script for any subject or situation imaginable. In 1985, Joe Oriolo and my Father James a Rumpf created a 23-minute cartoon pilot titled “Friends Make the World Go Round:”The Adventures of Professor Beethoven” This pilot aired on HBO and was rated #1 for its category, beating out “The Smurfs”! Unfortunately, Joe Oriolo passed away from cancer during this same year. My father, who was partners with Joe Oriolo, never continued this great project. In 2008, I started brain storming on the best thing to do with these great characters, I decided to create a line of children’s storybooks.
Thus the series, The Adventures of Professor Beethoven, is reborn. The Pacific Ocean is the first in what I see as a series of Kids Story Books. Future titles include Mr. Hoot changes Wall Street, Dubios’s Chocolate Factory and Professor Beetoven Friends are forever, all with great characters created by Joe Oriolo creator of Casper and producer of Felix the Cat. Think of stuttering Elmer Fudd updated to Barnacle Bill. He’s the old guy who can’t quite get it right and makes children laugh. They are all so colorful and memorable they offer hundreds of licensing possibilities for educational toys, books and clothing, not to mention TV and online animation.
Experts in education agree that capturing a child’s attention is paramount to successful teaching. The Pacific Ocean and its successors fill that criterion.
I have assembled a group of experts to help me with this project: Writers, marketers, coaches. I see my knack for team building and a sense of humor that makes me interviewable as strengths I can contribute to the long-term success of this series. I see the quality of my epub e books together with the current interest of the press in technology as it relates to education as positive aspects for its publicity campaign.
